§1The three commands you need

Remote (Streamable HTTP)

claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url>

Local (stdio) — everything after -- runs the server

claude mcp add <name> --env KEY=value -- npx -y some-mcp-server

Per Anthropic's docs, HTTP is the recommended transport for remote servers and SSE is deprecated. Use /mcp inside Claude Code to complete OAuth sign-in for remote servers.
